Overview of Shishapangma Base Camp Trek

Shishapangma Base Camp Trek is a challenging high altitude journey to the base of the 14th highest mountain in the world. Mount Shishapangma is located entirely within the Tibetan region of China. It is a unique adventure through isolated areas, offering stunning mountain scenery and an immersion into Tibetan culture.

Shishapangma (8046m) is probably the least known mountain, despite being only 80km northeast of Kathmandu. The round trip to Shishapangma will cost you five days. It is one of Tibet’s best kept trekking secrets, and it is also one of Tibet’s finest high alpine walks.

Shishapangma trek is one of the few treks that don’t involve pass crossing, which makes it a bit easier than our other treks in Tibet. This route from

Nyalam by trekking upstream through the Tsongdupu-chu valley offers fine views of the Langtang Himalayan peaks to the southeast. The monsoon from the Indian subcontinent manages to push over the Jugal Himal, bringing some rain most nights from June until early September. Most days are clear and we will have nourishing lush meadows and an outstanding display of wildflowers high into the mountains.

It is considered a moderate to challenging trip due to the very high altitude. Although it is a trek, not a technical climb, physical fitness and proper acclimatization are essential to prevent altitude sickness.

If necessary, our guide will assist in transferring you to a lower altitude location, such as Zhaxizong Township or Tingri County.

Best time to trek from Nyalam to Shishapangma Base Camp

The best time to visit Mount Everest is in Spring (April to early June) and Autumn (September to October) with fine weather, pleasant temperatures, and less rainfall. This means you have more chances to enjoy a clear view of the summit of Mt. Everest during your trip.

Though summer (July to August) is the rainy season in Tibet, it doesn’t impact daytime activities as most rainfall occurs at night. Just pay attention to the clouds and fog, which may potentially obstruct the full view of Mount Everest.

Winter is a good time to visit Shishapangma Base Camp but trekking is not advisable due to the freezing temperatures along the route, especially at night.

During the 5-day trek from Nyalam to Shishapangma Base Camp, camping at designated campsites is necessary. Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, the only accommodation option is the tent hotel, which offers quite basic lodging with relatively simple facilities. Most of the Tibetan-style tent hotels at Everest Base Camp feature dormitory-style sleeping arrangements.

During the winter season, the tent hotel will close, and accommodations need to be arranged in Zhaxizong Township or Tingri near the base camp.

Whenever you go to Everest, you need to prepare warm clothing for cold weather at such a high altitude. It’s advisable to wear outerwear that is easy to put on and take off, allowing you to adjust your clothing according to temperature changes.

Opt for windproof trousers and warm autumn trousers for the lower body. Choose non-slip sports shoes or hiking boots for your footwear. Don’t forget essentials like a scarf, gloves, and a hat.

Cell phone and internet access at Shishapangma Base Camp Trek

At present, Everest Base Camp has 5G signal coverage, but no WiFi service. Therefore, you can use mobile networks for communication.
