Tsurphu Yangpachen Trek is known for its mix of cultural sites and rugged alpine scenery. The route starts at the Tsurphu Monastery and concludes at the Yangpachen Monastery, passing through valleys inhabited by nomadic herders. Most tour packages include several days of acclimatization and sightseeing in Lhasa before the Tsurphu to Yangpachen Trek.
Due to the extreme altitude, proper acclimatization is essential. Trekkers should be in good health and physically fit to handle the demands of walking at high elevations. The trek is typically done as a guided, all-inclusive tour where camping gear, food, and guides are provided.
Tsurphu to Yangpachen Trek begins at Tsurphu Monastery and crosses several high valleys before coming into Yangpachen valley. This trek is a nicely balanced combination of cultural and wilderness activities, with alpine tundra, mountain panoramas, ancient monasteries and a remote nunnery.
This is a high-elevation trek, with the trail consistently above 4,400 meters and reaching a maximum elevation of over 5,300 meters at the Laser-la pass. The best time to this trek is from April to October when the weather is mild and the grasslands are in bloom.
